From 20th to 24th September, the Bosnian capital will welcome athletes who have dedicated years, often a lifetime, to judo. They arrive with experience, determination and a shared attachment to the values that continue to unite the judo family far beyond competitive careers.
The World Kata Championships will follow from 26th to 27th September, while a Special Olympics event between the two competitions will strengthen judo’s inclusive dimension further. Only a few weeks after the inspiring, inclusive activities of the Ecole Mont-Olivet Lausanne Grand Slam, Sarajevo will remind everyone that judo is a place where everyone can find opportunity, recognition and belonging.
On the eve of the first contests, while accreditation procedures continue at Hotel Hills, the event venue, several important meetings were taking place. The first brought together the members of the IJF Veterans Commission, led by Denis Weisser. A second meeting joined the commission with representatives of the 65 participating nations, offering an opportunity to share the latest practical information and to reflect on the importance of veteran competition collectively.
For Denis Weisser, these exchanges are an essential part of the championships, “These moments of interaction are very important. We will enjoy long and wonderful days of judo in the coming days and we are all very excited to begin.
Co-operation between all of us is crucial to the success of these championships. We have had wonderful editions in Las Vegas two years ago and Paris last year and I have no doubt that Sarajevo will also leave us with very special memories.
We have great affection and admiration for our community of judoka. The level rises every year. After the difficult Covid period, we have found a magnificent rhythm again.
I am very happy that Bosnia and Herzegovina is hosting us this year. I have complete confidence in its ability to organise a beautiful championship. I wish everyone the very best.”
In Sarajevo, medals will matter, as they always do, but they will tell only part of the story. These championships celebrate commitment, friendship and the enduring pleasure of stepping on to the tatami. For the veteran judoka gathering in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the season’s most important event is ready to begin.
